Greetings fellow wordsmiths!
As this is my inaugural WWG post I thought I’d start with a fun exercise from when I was a member of a local writers circle many years ago.
- But first a reminder about The Daily Writing Log, a Google Doc is still waiting for you! Simply enter your name at the top of the column and enter 1 (one) for each day of the month that you wrote. The spreadsheet automatically counts each day and gives you the total at the end of the month. Make sure you keep your log up to date!
And now on to the good stuff!
The WordWang exercise is an up to date version from one used at my old writers circle. Back in the day each member would write out a bunch of words then cut them into strips and place them in a bag. This was handed around the group and each member would take out a word, around and around it went until all the words were taken.
The task was to write a short piece of fiction or poetry that incorporated those words. Because it’s impossible to reach into your screen and pick out words I’ll make things easy by showing all the words.
WORDWANG EXERCISE.
Take a look at the table below. Your challenge this week is to write a story or poem using only these words. However, there is a catch!
- Your Title can only have 3 words from the Title Column. You can use “the” or “and” etc.
- Then choose only 5 words from Column A and only 5 words from Column B. 10 words in total.
- How, when, where and why you use them is up to you!
Why only 5 from each one? The aim of the exercise is to get your creativity flowing by using words you possibly wouldn’t normally consider. Think of it as a puzzle. The type of yarn you weave is up to you, go wild and see where the words lead you! I have fond memories of hearing the bizarre stories written by members of my writing circle.
Post your short fiction or poetry on your blog and link back to this page, or click here to share them in the WordWang section of the Forum.

Ain’t big, just different. You just gotta make a few decisions before you get to the writing!
